Georges Bizet’s well-known duet from the opera Les Pecheurs de Perles (the Pearl Fishers), famously performed by ‘The Three Tenors’.
Listen to an extract:
Georges Bizet, 1838 – 1875, in his short but brilliant career, produced few notable works but his opera Carmen has become one of the most frequently performed operas even though he thought it a failure. He was also a brilliant pianist but rarely performed in public. Whilst at the Conservatoire de Paris, he won many prizes including the treasured Prix de Rome. This well-known duet comes from the opera Les Pecheurs de Perles (the Pearl Fishers) and has been made famous with performances by ‘The Three Tenors’. This arrangement passes the theme around the quintet and demands dexterity on the instruments at the edges of their range.
