Listen to an extract:
Nikolai Rimsky Korsakov, 1844 – 1908, was a Russian master composer and orchestrator, a member of the Group of Five (Rimsky Korsakov, Borodin, Mussorgsky, Balakirev and Cui). He produced some magical music based on the Tradition of Russian music. Perhaps his best known piece is Scheherazade, a sumptuous suite of music.
Another of his well known pieces of music was The Flight of the Bumble Bee, written for his opera, The Tale of Tsar Sultan. The was originally a challenge for just the flute player in the orchestra and here it is arrange for wind quintet, where the theme is passed around the band.
