Listen to an extract:
George Gershwin (1898 – 1937), was a remarkable composer and pianist who’s work spanned several genres. He was equally at home in classical and jazz music. He is best known for his songs (eg. ’Swanee’), his opera Porgy and Bess with its haunting opening number, Summertime and for his orchestral pieces, Rhapsody in Blue and An American in Paris. He died of a brain tumour at the tender age of 39. Three of his most popular songs make up this arrangement for the modern wind quintet.
