Ronald Binge (1910 – 1979) was a composer and arranger of mostly light music. Born and brought up in Derby, his most well known pieces are Elizabethan Serenade and Sailing By. He also arranged most of Mantovani’s music for light orchestra. His alto saxophone concerto was written in 1956 and dedicated to the American virtuoso, Sigurd Rascher. An arrangement of the concerto was made for symphonic windband in 1979 but by then Ronald was ill with the cancer that ended his life and so was unable to attend the premier. This arrangement for standard wind quintet offers the solo to a clarinet in A as an alternative to the saxophone.
